The Young People’s Ballet Summer Intensive, under the direction of Denise Paavola, is offering an affordable training opportunity for Intermediate and Advanced students of dance in our 5,000 square foot studio. Always striving for excellence, we pride ourselves in preparing students for professional careers and for college dance programs. We know our conservatively priced program will fulfill your need to learn, stay in shape and supplement your dance training this summer!

Paavola, a native of Flint, MI, formerly danced with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and Ballet Michigan. She founded Young People’s Ballet Theatre for young dancers twenty-nine years ago and is now proud to bring two of our past students, Kalle Paavola Miller and Hannah Buggy, back to teach in this intensive.

Kalle Paavola Miller danced with the Paavola School of Dance (now called Young People’s Ballet School) and performed with Young People’s Ballet Theatre, doing lead roles such as Mary Lennox in Dale Brannon’s Secret Garden, Swanhilda from Coppelia and Aurora from Sleeping Beauty. She attended many excellent summer programs including the Joffrey Ballet Summer Workshop, the Pacific Northwest Ballet Summer Program and the Chautauqua Institution Summer Ballet Program. After high school, Kalle went on to dance with the Pittsburgh Theatre Graduate Training Program and subsequently became a company member. While there, she worked with notable teachers and choreographers including Terrence Orr, Marianna Tcherkassky, Roberto Munoz, Derek Deane, Dwight Roden, Kevin O’Day, Lynne Taylor Corbett, Jiabin Pan, and Alan Obuzor. Since her retirement from professional dancing, Kalle has taught at Cary Ballet Conservatory, Destiny Dance Institute, and International Ballet Academy.

Hannah Buggy grew up in Port Huron and commuted many years to study with Ms. Paavola at Young People’s Ballet Theatre. While there, she performed lead roles with our company, including Cinderella in our production of Cinderella and the role of the Governess in Heidi. Hannah is presently a Trainee with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, performing this year in their Nutcracker and Giselle; she also performed Etudes with the West Virginia University’s Dance department. Hannah has taught at the Dance Company Conservatory in Port Huron and was the Assistant Artistic Director for the Port Huron Nutcracker Ballet Company. She has spent her summers at prestigious programs including the National Ballet School in Toronto, Canada.

For college students who are at least 18 years of age and coming from out-of-town, discounted housing arrangements at one of our local hotels are available.
